Armand Duplantis has finally received his plate in Avesta.
Afterwards, “Mondo” was moved by the fine tribute.
– It means everything to me, he says.
Armand Duplantis is undoubtedly Sweden’s hottest athlete at the moment. The 22-year-old has had a remarkable season so far, and was at his very best during the Athletics World Championships in the USA.
Powerful tribute
The Swede was totally superior in the final, and was the only one to jump over six meters. But that’s not enough. Duplantis broke a new championship record with 6.06 meters, and then broke his own world record with a jump of 6.21 meters.
Afterwards, the 22-year-old has been praised enormously, and on Sunday he was on site in Avesta for a ceremony that both he and the city have been waiting for for over two years. The superstar has roots in Avesta, where his mother grew up and both grandmother and grandfather still live.
After the first world record in 2020, it was decided that he would take a seat next to, among others, Nicklas Lidström and Tony Rickardsson and get a plaque dedicated to himself.
“Means everything”
On Sunday, it was finally time – and “Mondo” was of course there to unveil its own plate in the square.
– Avesta means everything to me. This is where I found Sweden. For me it means everything, says “Mondo” to Radiosporten.
He continues:
– This (Avesta) is like a second home to me. I always feel at home here.
Armand Duplantis currently has some well-deserved time off before the European Athletics Championships in Munich, Germany.
