Four years after James Cameron’s Titanic, an explosive cinema visionary set out to create one dramatic love story against the backdrop of great history to tell. Today Pearl Harbor is on TV, in which Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett witness the surprise attack.

Michael Bay talks about the “Day of Shame” in the war film

US President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it the “Day of Infamy”. Japanese attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Armageddon – The Last Judgment director Michael Bay and author Randall Wallace, however, are less interested in the nuances of the scar that Pearl Harbor left on the public memory of the United States. For their film, they put the spotlight on the (fictional) tragedies that great history leaves behind in the lives of small people.

Two of them are Rafe (Ben Affleck) and Danny (Josh Hartnett), who have dreamed of flying since they were young. On the way there, Rafe meets nurse Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale), but the blossoming romance is interrupted by Rafe’s deployment to England, where he is supposed to support the Royal Air Force in the fight against the Germans.

Danny, on the other hand, ends up at the Pearl Harbor military base and meets Evelyn there. When she receives the (false) report of Rafe’s death, the two grow closer in their grief. In the Night before the attack on Pearl Harbor The man who was believed to be dead appears, but fate has other plans for the trio.

Pearl Harbor failed with criticism

Clearly no expense or effort was spared in the production of Pearl Harbor. The depiction of the attack, which resulted in a devastating number of victims, is still impressive today. Pearl Harbor was released in 2001 and can easily compete with younger genre comrades. At least as far as the superficialities are concerned. The soulless love story and tasteless dialogue reduce the quality of Bay’s epic, especially in comparison to the great role model Titanic.

Pearl Harbor was received largely negatively by critics, there were four nominations in technical categories at the Oscars. The blockbuster was more well received by the Golden Raspberry. The Razzies’ six nominations included one in the worst picture category. Pearl Harbor also (fortunately?) came away empty-handed.
