White western heroes follow natives who have kidnapped a group of innocent people. This story has already been seen in a similar form in genre classics such as The Black Falcon. But what Bone Tomahawk does with the story is so gripping and disturbingly brutal, that the horror trip will stay with viewers forever.

When an indigenous tribe kidnaps a group of white settlers, Sheriff Hunt (Kurt Russell) and a few colleagues prepare to pursue them. The natives of the area are considered mystical cannibals. But the man-eaters are not the only danger, which threatens Hunt and his troop on the hunt.

The western by S. Craig Zahler (Brawl in Cell Block 99) benefits from a captivating dramaturgy that leaves no time for long pauses during the chase. Above all, extremely disturbing images create a mood that in the finale explodes in the minds of the audience with all its cruelty.

Only extremely few films manage to combine the Western and horror genres so masterfully and efficiently. And none of them are as relentlessly explicit as Bone Tomahawk. Counter transforms the often glorified Wild West into a nihilistic slaughterhouse, in which the agony of innocents at the hands of murderers of all skin colors is not only accepted, but greedily celebrated.
