Oil has reached land along the coastal strip between Lörby Kladd and Hörvik in Sölvesborg municipality. About 50 people are preparing the clean-up effort on land, which is led by the municipality.
– The smell is clearly felt here in the area along the coast and all around you can see a sticky form of heavy oil that is spread over a large area, says TV4’s reporter Mikael Nilsson.
The authority for community protection and preparedness and the county administrative board are assisting in the clean-up effort.
– We do not know how injured the wrecker is. She is standing in shallow water, four meters deep. When is it possible to pull her off, is it possible to pull her off at all and can you drain her of the oil that is left? These are the kinds of answers we hope to get during the day, says Peter Ryman, director of defense at the county administrative board.
Three kilometers from land
During the night, the Sea Rescue Society had a boat in place next to the grounded ship, which is about three kilometers from shore.
– We have bilges around the ship. We also have other boats that help the Coast Guard to lay out other lanyards, Ingemar Högstedt, station manager at the Sea Rescue Society in Sölvesborg.
The alarm about the grounding came at 06.25 on Sunday. Marco Polo was on his way from Trelleborg to Karlshamn and then continued to Klaipeda in Lithuania.
The coast guard has started a preliminary investigation into violations of the maritime law in connection with the accident.
