IT MAY CAUSE INFECTION IN THE NEWBORN
Underlining that the main transmission route of gonorrhea is sexual intercourse, Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Assoc. Dr. Emre Özgü said, “Gonorrhea is transmitted only by close contact from person to person. Being in the same environment is not contagious by using shared belongings or using shared toilets. Gonorrhea most commonly affects the genitals, cervix, urinary tract, anal area or throat. “In case of active infection in pregnant women, it can be transmitted to babies during birth and cause infection in the newborn,” said Assoc. Dr. Emre Özgü said, “The eyes are most affected during the newborn period”.
CAN ADVANCE WITHOUT SIGNS

TREATMENT IS POSSIBLE
“It is quite easy to diagnose after the examination in patients with complaints,” said Assoc. Dr. Özgü said, “In some cases, antigen and PCR tests may be requested to confirm the diagnosis. Patients with complaints should also be evaluated in terms of other diseases such as sexually transmitted hepatitis, HIV, and chlamydia, and necessary tests should be done.
Stating that appropriate antibiotic therapy can be performed in patients after diagnosis, Assoc. Dr. Emre Özgü ”Patients diagnosed with gonorrhea should be screened for other sexually transmitted diseases and treated for those diseases if necessary. In addition, the partners of the diagnosed patients should also be tested and if necessary, they should receive treatment.” He drew attention to the importance of the treatment of the spouses.
