Mass -compatible prestiges such as Breaking Bad do not start every day. The story about the cancer of chemistry Walter White, who begins to produce and sell Crystal Meth, went into TV history and made the protagonist played by Bryan Cranston as an antihero.
Today the Creator looks back on the series figure behind the legendary format, Vince Gilligan.
The Breaking Bad maker has a problem with antiheroes today: for Walter White it no longer wants to be celebrated
Gilligan received the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award The Writers Guild of America (WGA), who is awarded to a person for your life’s work once a year. According to Variety, the serial author said in his acceptance speech that he had mixed feelings compared to the Breaking Bad main character Walter White:
Walter White is one of the greatest villains of all time. But at the same time I would rather be celebrated to have created someone more inspiring. In 2025 it is time to speak openly, Because we live in an era, in the villain that run the real way of amok.
The Breaking Bad creator does not express it directly, but it makes it clear through further comments that it relates to the current political developments in the USA and the new government.
As early as 2022, Gilligan revealed in an interview with the New Yorker that he was now even critical of the Breaking series finale, which he ended after five seasons with the episode Felina:
The further I get away from Breaking Bad, The less compassion I have for Walter. He received a bright spot early on. And if he had been a better person, he would have swallowed his pride and used the opportunity to treat his cancer with the money that his former friend offered him: inside. He comes out under his own conditions, but it leaves a trace of destruction. I focus more on it than I used to do. Vince Gilligan advocates more good figures in the film and series world
During his acceptance speech, Gilligan finally advocated pulling more inspiration from good characters:
I think when we create figures that are as indelible as Michael Corleone, Hannibal Lecter, Darth Vader or Tony Soprano, listens to the audience around the world. You say, ‘man, these guys are bathroom. I want to be so cool too. ‘ If that happens Hear the fictional bad guys to be the warning figures when they were created. God helps us, they have become directional.
The Breaking Bad-Macher, who also spins the story in the spin-off Better Call Saul with an anti-hero, is currently working on a new sci-fi series with Rhae Seehorn for Apple TV+. According to Gilligan, the Kim Wexler actress will play one through and through a good figure.
