Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the most common hormonal disorders in women. This disease, which manifests itself with the appearance of many benign cysts in the ovaries and requires regular treatment, is not only a risk for women. While it was determined that the risk of diabetes in men in the family of women with PCOS increased 2.5 times, European Society of Endocrinology Member Prof. Dr. Okan Bülent Yıldız said that in the next 2 years, it may be possible for men to be screened for “PCOS effects”.
IT CAUSES RISKS SUCH AS DIABETES AND HEART ATTACKS IF NOT TREATED CORRECTLY
The new research results that could change the game in the diagnosis and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome PCOS, known as a gynecological disease, were discussed. The disease, which occurs with the appearance of many benign cysts in the ovaries, can cause infertility, hair loss, weight gain, psychological problems and even risks such as diabetes and heart attack if the right treatment is not given. The fact that polycystic ovary syndrome, known as a gynecological disease until now, actually affects men, has also been demonstrated by recent meta-analysis studies conducted in Turkey and the USA.
FATHERS OF WOMEN WITH PCOS ARE 50% MORE THAN FATHER OF DIABETES
prof. Dr. Yıldız noted that the incidence of diabetes in the fathers of women with PCOS is 50 percent higher, serious insulin resistance is seen even in their younger brothers, and the risk of diabetes increases, and noted that in the next two years, all the routines in the diagnosis and treatment guidelines regarding PCOS may be broken. prof. Dr. Yıldız said, “The latest meta-analysis study conducted in the world has shown that although it has ‘ovary’ in its name, men can actually be affected by this disease today. It is possible to meet a concept called male PCOS. The necessity of screening for metabolic effects (heart, sugar, blood pressure, etc.) will be included as a recommendation in the new guideline in the next two years. Noting that this issue will be included in international diagnosis and treatment guidelines in the near future, Prof. Dr. Yıldız said: “So it is possible to meet the concept of male PCOS. In families with PCOS, not only women but also men should be screened in terms of hidden sugar, sugar and metabolic effects, and in the next 2 years, new diagnosis and treatment guides, It seems possible for us to put this recommendation as well.”
IT IS SEEN IN ONE OF EVERY 7 WOMEN IN TURKEY
Pointing out that polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common hormonal disorder in women of childbearing age, Dr. Yıldız said, “It is seen in one out of every 5 women in the world, and in one out of every 7 women in Turkey. This disorder has significant difficulties for both physicians and patients. PCOS is perceived as a gynecological disease because its name is polycystic ovary, that is, ovaries, but ours was a long time ago. When we evaluated the parents, sisters and brothers of young women with PCOS in terms of metabolic effects, namely insulin resistance, latent diabetes and diabetes, we found that fathers and brothers were also affected, besides mothers and sisters. We observed that the rate of latent diabetes and diabetes in fathers was 50 percent, and that there was hidden insulin resistance even in younger brothers.A recent meta-analysis we conducted by putting together the results of all these studies showed that women with PCOS had both their mothers and their mothers. the risk of diabetes in their fathers has increased by up to 2.5 times. In fact, men can also be affected by a disease with ‘ovary’ in its name, which we can say with new data. It is very important to evaluate men in terms of hidden sugar and metabolic problems,” he said.
PCOS CAUSES A LOT OF HEALTH PROBLEMS
prof. Dr. Yıldız said, “This syndrome causes menstrual irregularity. It causes cosmetic problems. Increase in body hair, hair loss, acne, weight gain is much easier in these patients. Insulin resistance is one of the important problems. Again, we struggle with difficulties in getting pregnant and infertility. “There is a very high rate of psychological disorders as well. Our data from Turkey shows that depression is 7 times more common in women with PCOS.”
PCOS RATE IS HIGH IN EARLY ADOLESCENTS
Adding that women usually apply to gynecology specialists at first, but this lifelong hormonal disorder should be followed by many branches, Prof. Dr. Yıldız said, “Generally, gynecology clinics are first applied to. But in fact, it is a multidisciplinary problem that must be managed by many specialties. In this sense, the contribution of gynecology and obstetrics is important. Especially in terms of infertility. But besides gynecology, the endocrinologist deals with unwanted cosmetic problems, Hormones should be followed up. Also, dermatology clinics need to be knowledgeable about this issue because of its effects on the skin. Special psychological disorders also need to be dealt with, and nutrition is also a very important issue in PCOS. Therefore, there should be a multi-team in the management of many branches. At the European Congress of Endocrinology We also included more than one session on PCOS in our program this year. One of them was the genetic and epigenetic transmission of PCOS in families. early teen Many of those who enter the prenatal period may have PCOS.” he said.
