‘SEE ONE IN 5,000’
Pediatric Surgeon Specialist Opr. Dr. Stating that the patient came from Erzincan and was at the 36th hour of his birth, Fikret Ersöz said, “We found that there was anal atresia (absence of breech in the baby) in our examinations.
Friends in Erzincan called us. They stated that the child could not poop and his stomach was swollen. It was referred to us by 112 because we said that patients in anal atresia should have surgery. The operation took 2.5 hours. There was a lot of stool output, the swollen stomach was reduced. It’s a one in 5,000 disease. It is seen equally in boys and girls.
THE SURGERY WAS SUCCESSFUL
After the operation, the care and follow-up of the patient is very important. We could have opened a colostomy for this patient and opted for a 3-session surgery. But choosing a risky situation, we decided to do a one-session surgery. The surgery went really well. If everything goes well for 15 days, we will discharge our patient in good health. When the patient came, we saw that he had 6 fingers on his right hand. In general, in these patients, there may be anomalies in the heart, spine, kidney and esophagus together with the absence of the buttocks. We call this the ‘vacterl syndrome’. Our baby only had 6 fingers on his right hand. Hopefully, we will send this patient home in good health. We will be happy too,” he said.
