It is seen in 1 out of every 10 women

Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist Prof. Dr. Faruk Buyru stated that polycystic ovary syndrome is a type of endocrine disorder that can cause problems at every stage of a woman’s life and closely concerns all health. Emphasising that the syndrome does not only cause problems related to reproduction, Buyru stated that it also causes problems related to gaining weight in young girls. Prof. Dr. Buyru stated that in young girls experiencing the syndrome, hair growth, hair loss, oily skin and acne are more common due to the increase in male hormones. On the other hand, Buyru emphasised that the most effective way to control the syndrome is to lose weight.

“WOMEN WITH POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME MAY ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS DURING PREGNANCY”

Stating that the syndrome also causes health problems during pregnancy, Buyru said, “Problems such as gestational diabetes and high blood pressure are more common in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. These can be eliminated with weight control, nutrition, some supportive treatments and medications.”

“POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME THREATENS HEALTH DURING MENOPAUSE TOO”

Buyru, who pointed out that the syndrome could also cause health problems during menopause if precautions were not taken, said, “It can present itself as thickening in the uterus, an increase in uterine cancer, an increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease, an increase in diabetes and problems that threaten the general health of women.”

“INSULIN RESISTANCE HAS A ROLE IN THE EMERGENCE OF POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME”

Prof. Dr. Buyru noted that half of women with polycystic ovary syndrome have insulin resistance. Stating that studies have shown that insulin resistance plays a role in the emergence of the disease, Buyru stated that insulin resistance can also be seen in thin polycystic ovary syndrome patients. Emphasizing that health risks that may arise in later years can be prevented if weight is lost, Buyru said, “It is possible to eliminate or reduce the risk of uterine cancer, diabetes, and heart disease with precautions taken at these ages. When a woman reaches reproductive age and wants to have children, she may encounter problems such as menstrual irregularity and inability to conceive due to ovulation problems. In this case, even if she does not want to have children, regulating her menstrual cycle is important in terms of reducing the risk of uterine cancer. It is necessary to take precautions such as exercise and changes in diet against insulin resistance. Patients with polycystic ovary syndrome cannot lose weight very easily due to hormonal disorders. In this case, some medications can come into play. If polycystic ovary syndrome accompanies the weight problem in the fertile age, losing even 5 percent of the weight can be very important. “So, a woman who weighs 80 kilos can regulate her menstrual cycle, get pregnant and eliminate ovulation problems by losing 4-5 kilos,” he said.

“THOSE WITH POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME CAN GET PREGNANT WITH TREATMENT”

Stating that those with polycystic ovary syndrome can get pregnant with treatment, Buyru said, “Among couples who want to have children, those with polycystic ovary syndrome have the most promising treatment. Because the chance of getting pregnant can be very high with oral medications or injections. It is even possible to get pregnant by just losing weight. When in vitro fertilization is performed, it is possible to obtain a large number of eggs and increase the chance of getting pregnant.”
