It is his first horror leading role in over 30

The British charmer Hugh Grant is known from romantic films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill or Love Actually. He also played the villain in Paddington 2 and Dungeons & Dragons, but as a sadistic villain in a full-blown horror film we have never seen him.

This will change on November 15, 2024, when Heretic will be released from A24 is coming to US cinemas. Here is the original English trailer:

Heretic – Trailer (English) HD

This is what the unholy horror film with Hugh Grant in the leading role is about

In Heretic by A Quiet Place duo
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods take two young missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) from house to house. A friendly-looking man (Grant) invites them to his place for cake and conversation, but the mood soon turns sour. The women notice that something is wrong and soon realize how right they were with their ominous suspicion.

As can be seen in the preview, the missionary locks her up in order to to test their faith in a series of testsThey have to choose between two different doors, as if Grant’s character were a gentler version of Jigsaw from the Saw torture franchise. Only God knows what he wants to achieve with these games.

The only question that remains is: Will Grant’s horror character from Heretic be scarier than the godless CGI Ooma-Loompa he played in Wonka?

Heretic is not the first horror film with Hugh Grant … but it’s been a while

At the beginning of his career, in 1988, Hugh Grant starred in cult director Ken Russell’s horror comedy The Bite of the Snake Woman. In the adaptation of The Castle of the Serpent by Dracula author Bram Stoker, he played Lord James D’Ampton, whose ancestors were killed by a dragon snake according to legend. In 1993, Grant’s work got even scarier in the German-produced Italo horror Night Train to Venice by director Carlo U. Quinterio – also in the lead role.

His upcoming horror film Heretic does not yet have a German release date.
