At first glance, Starship Troopers could be labeled as glorifying war and violence, and given the book, such accusations would actually hit the mark. But the film masterfully manages to depict the horrors of intergalactic war and the fascist military dictatorship on Earth in such a cynical way that it is a real joy to watch – as ironic as that may sound.
Today on TV: What is the exceptional sci-fi film Starship Troopers actually about?
We accompany a group of young friends who enlist in the military straight after school and are really keen to go to war together. After all, it should against the archenemy of humanity go: the so-called bugs, insect-like aliens. They then directly destroy the hometown of Rico (Casper van Dien), Diz (Dina Meyer), Carmen (Denise Richards) and Carl (Neil Patrick Harris).
But the campaign of revenge in real war turns out to be much less fun and easy than the young recruits in training were led to believe. The bugs are intelligent, extremely brutal and cannot be eradicated easily. The human soldiers are primarily used as cannon fodder and the shock at this realization is deep.
Starship Troopers delivers sci-fi action, war atrocities and biting satire
Here you get the full range and a unique mix burned onto your retina. What begins as an amusing teen flick and film about harsh military training quickly turns into an extremely violent, nightmarish war film. But Starship Troopers still remains light-footed and entertaining enough. At least if you’re generally into sci-fi and downright cynical satire.
The young people actually only sign up for military service on a semi-voluntary basis; even during their training they encounter various veterans with the most severe mutilations and the whole thing is garnished with absurd propaganda videos that are intended to serve as indoctrination. Despite all the cruelty shown, we are dealing with a deeply democratic film that breaks a lance for freedom.
Also a mix of science fiction, satire and shocking images The film The Substance is currently conjuring up the screen. You can read why you should definitely watch the sci-fi horror film in the cinema, which is disgusting right up to the crazy finale, in this Moviepilot article.
