Before the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, blockbusters like 300 and Sin City gave comic book films unprecedented imagery. With his adaptation of Frank Miller’s sinister originals, Robert Rodriguez in particular created a pitch-black film noir hit with images like flipping through a comic while watching. Tele 5 airs Sin City on Tuesday nights at 10:20 p.m.

Sin City marked a new milestone in the possibilities of comic book adaptations

The film’s story dives into the eponymous city, which dirty, constantly raining Moloch equals. For his adaptation, the director mixed several comic storylines.

Among other things, it is about the aging cop Hartigan (Bruce Willis), who wants to free the little girl Nancy from the clutches of a sex offender with an influential father. Another story sends released inmate Marv (Mickey Rourke) after the death of a prostitute on a vendetta against a cruel serial killer (Elijah Wood).

In terms of atmosphere, Sin City is an incomparably dense work that depicts the city as a hellhole in desolate black and white. Only very rarely does Rodriguez let individual splashes of color into his film, but they hardly create a brighter mood.

In addition to the visionary staging, for which the directors mainly translated the Miller templates panel by panel as a film, Sin City trumps above all with the impressive star ensemble. Straight Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood plays his most disturbing role here ever as the psychopathic serial killer Kevin.

Combined with the incredible brutality, detailed execution and unique atmosphere, Sin City remains one of the best comic book movies of all time.
