Is it really Ki-Adi-Mundi? Or another Cerean Jedi? The credits provide certainty: In the guest stars section, Derek Arnold, who has played various supporting characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story, is officially listed as Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi.

His appearance is causing a stir for a specific reason: In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, he is the one who insists that the Sith pose no threat more for the galaxy. “Impossible, the Sith have been extinct for a millennium”is his iconic sentence from Episode I, which is now causing confusion.

How does Ki-Adi-Mundi explain the Sith who are causing trouble in The Acolyte?

Does The Acolyte break the Star Wars canon? Two theories for Ki-Adi-Mundi’s strange behavior

Did the people responsible for The Acolyte simply not pay attention and write a version of the character that contradicts the Ki-Adi-Mundi from the prequels? Probably not. There are two theories that can be put forward to explain the Jedi Master’s vehement Sith denial in Episode I without breaking the canon.

  • Theory 1: The enigmatic antagonist in The Acolyte is not a Sith at all, but simply a villain who has familiarized himself with the teachings of the Dark Side of the Force and has acquired a red lightsaber. This would prove Ki-Adi-Mundi in Episode I right. Based on his experiences, the Sith were wiped out. Admittedly, that would be a fairly harmless twist.
  • Theory 2: This is where things get much more exciting and, above all, darker. What if some of the Jedi in The Acolyte actually find out about the survival of the Sith and Ki-Adi-Mundi covers up the incident from the Jedi Council? He lives a lie for 100 years before becoming a victim of the Sith himself in Order 66. Star Wars could tell an extremely grim, bitter and tragic story here.

Ki-Adi-Mundi in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith

The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland has already hinted before the series starts that she is very interested in to examine the Jedi Order in detail and to reveal some dark sides. The prequels had already questioned the image of the shining guardians of law and peace in the galaxy.

In The Acolyte, Headland could become a whole lot more uncomfortable. After all, we are in the age of the High Republic, exactly the time when the Jedi at the height of their power But slowly but surely it becomes clear that the Order is not as brilliantly white as the robes worn by the Jedi.
