Glycidol and 3-MCPD compound, which are in the content of trans fats such as margarine, are classified as 2nd class carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer under the World Health Organization.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) classifies glycidol as “genotoxic and carcinogenic,” meaning it can damage DNA and cause tumors.

The research found that the trans fat in margarine is associated with an increased risk of cancers of the lung, colon, rectum, breast, endometrium and prostate.
