The Swedish national team is in a dark period right now.
Then coach icon Tommy Svensson raises his voice and vents his criticism.
– This has been missing in recent years, I think, he tells Radiosporten.
Recent years have been tough for the Swedish men’s national team. After Janne Andersson’s successful start, he charmed the entire Swedish people and became extremely popular.
Sweden’s fiasco
But the end of his time as national captain was not at all gracious and the majority shouted for his departure after Blågult missed out on two straight championships. Now new times await with a new national team captain in the form of Jon Dahl Tomasson and Sweden will become a reborn national team again.

However, many see dark clouds over the future of Swedish national team football after some really tough years where Sweden has fallen behind the top nations. Now raise the trainer icon Tommy Svensson the voice and wants to bring about a change for Blågult’s future.
Svensson’s criticism
The former national team captain led Sweden to a successful World Cup bronze during the unforgettable World Cup in 1994 in the USA. Now he puts his finger on what the big problem is and wants to see a rejuvenation in the back line.
– Yes absolutely. You have to start over to get a solid and distinct defensive game. Because that has been missing in recent years, I think. These young guys that we see making success in Europe, they are all offensively oriented. We should probably think about bringing in some young defensive players as well, he says in an interview with Radiosporten.

Svensson himself remembers how he paired the 20-year-olds Joachim Björklund and Patrik Andersson and formed a feared centre-back duo in the 90s.
– If I look back at my time, I’m glad that I dared to invest in young defenders like Jocke Björklund and Patrik Andersson as center locks. Many raised their eyebrows. They were just over 20 years old when they played together in the European Championship in 1992 for the first time. But they became the framework for what became so successful, he says.
