It happens if you forget to put your phone on

Putting smaller bags under the seat in front of you, putting on your seat belt and putting your mobile phone on airplane mode – this is part of the routine when you’re out flying.

But why do the latter? Can the mobile network negatively affect the technology in the plane in any way, and in the worst case cause the system to be knocked out?

The answer to that question is no, absolutely not.

In a viral video on Tiktok, pilot @perchpoint explains what it all boils down to, which also Today’s have noticed.

“This is just a friendly reminder that the airplane mode button on your phone is not a conspiracy. If you forget to put your phone on airplane mode, it’s not the end of the world. The plane won’t fall from the sky, and it won’t disrupt the systems on board “, the pilot says in the clip.

But, it can create some irritation for the pilots during flight. When multiple phones try to connect to nearby cell towers at the same time, the radio frequencies can potentially affect reception in their headsets.

“If you have a plane with 70, 80 or 150 passengers, and only three or four of them have not put their phones on airplane mode, the signals from the phones can cause noise on the headset,” explains the pilot.

The fact that you are asked to put the mobile on airplane mode is simply to avoid interference.
