It happens if you eat too many vitamins

Spring is here and many welcome the sun and warmth with open arms. Now they want to put “vabruari” behind them and boost the immune system for spring and summer.

According to a survey, carried out by Verian on behalf of Apotek Hjärtat, it could be seen that a full 83 percent of all Swedes resort to various tricks and home remedies to keep their immune system strong.

There were 2,208 randomly selected people who participated in the survey and all of them came from the Swedish public and were between 18 and 84 years old. It was a representative sample that can reflect the entire Swedish population.

The survey showed, among other things, that more than one in three people take various food supplements with the hope of good health effects. The survey also showed that one in six Swedes eats garlic, because they think it will give them a good immune system.

Many foods that are rich in antioxidants

News24 have talked to Annika Svedberg, chief pharmacist at Apotek härtat, if there are actually any health benefits from home remedies.

– Many foods that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins or minerals contribute to a well-functioning immune system – for example garlic, but also other foods such as fruit, vegetables, fatty fish and nuts. If you eat versatile, you usually get enough vitamins and minerals to give your immune system good conditions, says Annika Svedberg to Nyheter24.

Then you may need to take nutritional supplements

A varied diet is thus in itself a good basis for a strong immune system. If, on the other hand, you exclude a certain type of diet such as meat and fish, you may need to supplement with supplements.

– During the dark season in Sweden, some groups may also need extra vitamin D to help the immune system on the run. Worth mentioning is that there are also more parameters that affect one’s immune system in addition to a nutritious diet. For example, one’s sleep patterns, exercise habits, stress, and whether one smokes or drinks a lot of alcohol.

It happens if you eat too many vitamins

If you eat a varied diet but still supplement with lots of food supplements, there is a risk of taking in too much.

Therefore, Annika Svedberg warns that you should always follow the dosage and preferably consult a pharmacist before starting a dietary supplement, in order to reduce side effects.

– It is important to use these (dietary supplements ed.) in the right way and in the right dose to get the best possible effect, and reduce the risk of side effects. Therefore, feel free to consult with us at the pharmacy or healthcare before use, explains Annika Svedberg and continues:

– Some food supplements are water-soluble, for example vitamin C, which means that you usually pee out any excess. Some dietary supplements, on the other hand, are fat-soluble, for example vitamins A and D, and there you should be extra careful that the dosage is correct, as an excess of these is more difficult for the body to handle.
