It flopped 15 years ago but its not that bad

That’s how it can work: Completely surprisingly, the fantasy horror ruins in the German Netflix charts at number 1 set. Alexandre Aja’s film trumped stiff competition such as Ghostbusters: Legacy and The Conjuring 3. It’s late glory for Ruins. When it was originally released 15 years ago, hardly anyone wanted to see it.

Netflix hit Out of Nowhere: What is Ruins about?

Jeff (Jonathan Tucker) vacations in Mexico with his girlfriend Amy (Jena Malone) and another couple. There they befriend Mathias (Joe Anderson), a tourist from Germany. He invites the group to join the search for his missing brother Henry (Jordan Patrick Smith).

The group drives deep into the jungle to an ancient ruin. Once there, she is surprised and captured by an ancient Mayan tribe. The tribe locks the group to a mysterious plant that has grown into Henry and killed him. A battle against nature begins.

Also interesting:

Ruins went under completely in 2008 – despite the Hunger Games star

On an estimated budget of $25 million, ruins raked in just under $23 million, Box Office Mojo reports — a poor result. It’s a pity really, because Alexandre Aja managed to create a thoroughly routine horror with an interesting premise. When do you see plants as enemies? (We deliberately do not count the happening)

Jena Malone in ruins

The cast of the fantasy horror is also interesting: Jena Malone upgraded cult films like Sucker Punch and Donnie Darko in the 00s and 10s. She probably had her biggest appearance as tough Johanna in the Hunger Games franchise alongside Jennifer Lawrence. Malone in particular deserves the late success ofruins.
