Armand Duplantis beat new world year best.
But afterwards it was all about a real organizer scandal.
– I’m just happy that I’m healthy, says Duplantis afterwards.
Armand Duplantis was, as usual, superior when Oslo’s Diamond League competition was decided. This is despite the fact that the conditions were far from optimal. The rain was pouring down over the Norwegian capital, and in other words it was not a dreamy pole vault weather.
The big scandal
However, Duplantis won the competition after jumping a full 6.02 – that means a new world year best, and a new gala record. An extra nice message for Duplantis as this was the penultimate competition before the World Cup, which starts in the USA in July.
But after the competition, most of it was about a real organizer scandal. It was when Duplantis was about to jump the second time at 5.92 that someone had forgotten a towel in the pole vault pit, and in the middle of his attempt, the Swede was forced to interrupt. Duplantis gestured angrily, and afterwards his manager, Daniel Wessfeldt, stated:
– It’s a scandal.
“Could have gone to hell”
Armand Duplantis himself was just happy that it did not go bad.
– It can be very scary and dangerous. I’m just happy that I’m healthy now, he says to VG.
However, he says that he quickly released the fad.
– It was an honest mistake, so I could only be angry for a little while.
Daniel Wessfeldt believes that it is not often that Duplantis erupts.
– He usually does not react so strongly. But it was a bit of a scandal that could have gone straight to hell. I’m just glad he was not injured. It is inhuman that he then jumps 6.02 afterwards.
