With his oppressive horror drama Hereditary – The Legacy, director Ari Aster was suddenly seen as a major new genre talent in the film landscape. His subsequent feature film Midsommar is hardly less haunting, in which a group of friends’ trip to Sweden slowly turns into a hellish inferno.

After the tragic death of her parents and sister, Dani (Florence Pugh) joins her boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor) on a trip to Sweden to distract herself from her grief. The group finds themselves in a remote community in the countryside unusual customs celebrated and prepared a big summer festival. Strange incidents are slowly increasing in this mysterious community.
Aster’s horror film gradually feels like a never-ending delirium like a far too long day in the blazing sun at. In addition to the strange rituals and customs of the village community, the director also observes Dani and Christian’s dysfunctional relationship like an open wound that festers more and more painfully.

Florence Pugh in Midsommar
In Midsommar, the director skillfully juggles black humorous interludes, which can be followed by a disturbing, shocking moment in the next scene. What’s really going on in the Swedish commune will come as no surprise to experienced horror fans. Still, they’re impressive Genre pieces from love magic to incest, which are celebrated or twisted by Aster. The highlight is the finale, in which the surreal chaos is taken to the extreme.
Shooting Midsommar was torture for Florence Pugh
In the Off Menu podcast, the Midsommar star spoke about how filming the horror film was extremely demanding for her and pushed her to her limits:
When I [Midsommar] I was very caught up in it when I shot it. I had never played someone in so much pain and I put myself in really shitty situations to do it. Other actors may not have to do that, but I imagined the most terrible things. […]Because every day the film content became stranger and more difficult to complete. I was putting things in my head that were getting worse and bleaker.
