Prosecutors have now requested that Istanbul’s custodial mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the foremost challenger to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, should be formally arrested.
A court will now decide whether Imamoglu should be prosecuted and imprisoned pending a trial.
Imamoglu, which is expected to be the opposition party CHP’s candidate in the next election, was arrested in a raid on Wednesday. He is accused by the authorities of supporting, among other things, a terrorist organization and corruption.
