Israeli President Isaac Herzog calls on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “immediately” stop the changes to the law that reduce the power of the Supreme Court.
In a statement, Herzog writes according to the newspaper Haaretz that “we have seen very difficult scenes tonight. I appeal to the Prime Minister, the members of the government and the members of the coalition. For the unity of the people of Israel, for the responsibility we owe, I call on you to stop the legislative process immediately”.
On Sunday, thousands of people protested in the streets of several Israeli cities, and also outside Netanyahu’s residence. The protests came after Defense Minister Yoav Gallant was forced out of the government when he spoke out critical of the government’s attempt to change the Supreme Court’s mandate.
Netanyahu is expected to address the Israelis on Monday morning.
