Israel told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it would prefer a diplomatic solution to the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program, but it could also act unilaterally.
Prior to this message Israel gave to IAEA President Rafael Grossi, Western countries had called on the Administrative Board of the institution to criticize Tehran for failing to answer questions about traces of uranium at facilities it did not disclose.
The conflict overshadowed efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran, which former US President Donald Trump withdrew unilaterally in 2018. Efforts to revive the agreement have so far not yielded results.
Since Washington’s withdrawal from the accord and reimposition of sanctions on Iran, Tehran, which maintains its nuclear program is peaceful, has stepped up its uranium enrichment process, which has the potential to produce fuel for the bomb.
According to the statement made by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s office, in his meeting with Bennett Grossi, he emphasized the importance of the IAEA Administrative Board giving a clear and clear message to Iran.
“Although Israel prefers diplomacy to not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons, Israel reserves the right to defend itself and take action to halt Iran’s nuclear program if the international community fails to do so within a certain timetable,” the statement said.
In his message shared on Twitter, Grossi stated that he visited Israel upon invitation and emphasized to Israeli Prime Minister Bennett the “importance of the IAEA’s protective measures and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) for global peace and security”.
Grossi did not directly pronounce the name of Iran, which is a party to the NPT, in his post.
Israel, supposedly possessing nuclear weapons, was excluded from this voluntary agreement, which allowed signatories to run a civilian nuclear energy program on the condition that they do not produce nuclear weapons.
