An Israeli has been shot dead near a settlement in the West Bank. The suspected perpetrator has been killed by Israeli soldiers.
Earlier, Israel shelled targets in southern Lebanon in response to a shell attack from there.
The situation remains tense after Israel carried out extensive raids in Jenin on the West Bank at the beginning of the week.
Near the settlement of Kedumin in the northern part of the occupied West Bank, an Israeli was allegedly shot dead by a gunman who was later killed by Israeli soldiers, reports Haaretz.
A spokesman for the militant Palestinian movement Hamas praised the attack, describing it as “a response to the Israeli aggression against Jenin”.
Earlier on Thursday, the Israeli military fired at targets in southern Lebanon. According to the military, it was in response to a projectile being fired earlier from Lebanon at the border town of Ghajar, which is shared between Israel and Lebanon. The projectile is said to have struck on the Israeli side without injuring people.
It is unclear who fired the projectile from Lebanon. The Lebanese army has not commented on the events.
Ghajar, which has long been a point of contention between Israel, Syria and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon, lies on the border between Lebanon and the Golan Heights, which Israel occupied in 1967.
The UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, is investigating the events on the ground and calls on both Israeli and Lebanese parties to exercise restraint, it says in a statement.
