Donald Trump signed a decree to take sanctions against the International Criminal Court. A decision that delights Israel, but denounced by the European Union.
Donald Trump Signed a new decree this Thursday, February 6. This text provides for sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), which he accuses of having “committed illegal and baseless actions against America and [son] Close ally, Israel “. This refers to the ICC surveys on alleged war crimes of American soldiers in Afghanistan but also of Israeli soldiers in Gaza. The ICC has also declared an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, and the former Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant. Their families or anyone who has made help with investigative work.
“The ICC has no competence on the United States or Israel, because none of the two countries is a party to the status of Rome or a member of the ICC,” he also recalled. The authority is, in fact, responsible for judging the individuals accused of genocide, crime against humanity and war crime which are committed by a national of a party party or in the territory of one of the 125 members.
The decision of the American president comes when he recently declared that the United States would take possession of the Gaza Strip and ensure their economic and real estate development. It is not, either, the first time that Donald Trump attacks the ICC. In 2020, during his previous mandate, he issued sanctions against Fatou Bensouda, then procure in the court. The new decree therefore crosses a higher step.
A European response?
The Israeli Prime Minister supported Donald Trump’s decision, going so far as to thank him X : “Thank you, President Trump, for your daring executive decree of the ICC. He will defend America and Israel against this corrupt, anti -American and anti -Semitic court, which has no competence or any basis for embarking on a legal war against us “He wrote.
Conversely, this decision was very badly received by the ICC which “condemns the publication by the United States of a decree aimed at imposing sanctions on its officials and to harm its independent and impartial legal work. The Court strongly supports Its staff and undertakes to continue to do justice and to restore hope to millions of innocent victims of atrocities around the world, in all the situations of which it is seized, “reacted the jurisdiction in a press release.
For its part, the European Union also defends the jurisdiction and even reserves “the possibility of taking measures”, but without detailing what form could take this answer. By attacking the ICC, Donald Trump once again opposes an international body. The leader has, in fact, already initiated a process of withdrawn from the United States from the World Health Organization.
