The Israeli government stops this year’s pride parade in Tel Aviv. Instead, the city will hold an event to honor those held hostage in Gaza and Islamist Hamas.

– This is not the right time to hold festivities, says Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai.

He says he hopes the tribute to the hostages will be characterized by “pride, hope and freedom”.

Huldai also promises that parts of the budget intended for the pride parade will go to a center for LGBTQ people in the city.

– We feel the pain of the entire country, but at the same time do not want to stop our fight for equality and freedom for everyone. See you at the pride parade in June 2025, he says.

The Tel Aviv Pride Parade is the largest annual LGBTQ event in the Middle East. This year’s parade was supposed to be held on June 7. In 2022, 170,000 people participated.

The somewhat smaller parade in Jerusalem will be held this year, albeit in a changed and less festive form, according to the government.
