Alexander Isak gave Joelinton the opener and the Brazilian ensured Newcastle won the first semi-final away to Southampton in the League Cup 1-0.
Isak started on the bench, but was replaced in the 67th minute.
Six minutes later, he was the architect behind the winning goal. Isak spun home defender Duje Caleta-Car – sent off in the final minutes – on the right wing, turned inside and the pass gave Joelinton an open goal from close range.
He didn’t miss.
Southampton had an equalizing goal disallowed two minutes later after VAR review by hand on goalscorer Adam Armstrong.
The return is played on January 31. In the other semi-final, Manchester United and Nottingham meet.
The final will be played at Wembley on February 26.
