36 years is a blink of an eye. At least that’s how it seems given the immense energy with which Top Gun: Maverick conquered the cinema almost four decades after its predecessor Top Gun – You Fear Neither Death nor the Devil. But when is Top Gun 3 coming? Is a third part even likely? Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski have already dropped some hints.

To get straight to the point: Top Gun 3 has not been officially confirmed. There have been no reports of any work on a Top Gun: Maverick sequel. But it is financially very likely: With $1.4 billion in international box office revenue (via The Numbers), Top Gun 2 is essentially an open gold mine.

In a Fandango interview quoted by FandomWire, Tom Cruise revealed a habit: Whenever he sees his latest films with the director, Cruise said, he then explains: “We can do that even better.” He also did that after Top Gun 2, as the star confirms. However, he avoids making a direct statement about Top Gun 3.
Director Joseph Kosinski’s statements are less vague. He speculated to Deadline:
Is there a story that can convince us to return? At the end of Top Gun: Maverick has [Hauptfigur] Maverick still has steam in the boiler. He’s not getting any quieter.
Top Gun 3 seems very likely from a financial and content standpoint, and Cruise and Kosinski are obviously interested in a sequel. There is probably a sequel just a question of time, in this case probably a question of a lot of time. The two are fully booked with projects like Mission: Impossible 8 and an as-yet-unnamed Formula 1 film.
When is Top Gun 3 coming to cinemas?
A start date for Top Gun 3 is therefore difficult to estimate. If Cruise and Kosinski can carve out time, that would be an important first step toward publication. Top Gun 3 probably won’t be released in cinemas before 2026.
