Englishman Luke Littler rewrites history at the World Darts Championship.
British boy Luke Littler has emerged in recent days as perhaps the most famous 16-year-old athlete in the world at the moment. The achievements of the teenage talent at the World Darts Championships held in London have attracted widespread international attention.
The player born in 2007 entered the tournament as a clear contender. Littler is 164th in the world ranking. However, on New Year’s Day, he already advanced to the semifinal stage of the tournament.
Littler has defeated several experienced stars on his way to the top four. Kovi’s victory came from the multiple World Cup winner of the sport, of Raymond van Barneveld. In the semifinals, he knocked down the 50-year-old By Brendan Dolan 5 to 1 reading.
In his semi-final match on Tuesday night, Littler will face the world number one, by Rob Cross. He is the World Cup winner from six years ago.
Getting into the sport at an early stage
The Briton has already made history by being the youngest ever to reach the top four. With his great performances, Littler has already been talked about winning this year’s World Championship gold.
He told For Sky News having had his first contact with dart boards at the age of one and a half. The parents have played a golden role in Littler’s journey towards the world elite of the sport.
– They can’t believe it, and I can’t believe it either, Littler refers to his recent achievements.
– It is important that I have parents who help and are always there for me. Honestly, there couldn’t be a better group.
Littler has been given the nickname The Nuke, i.e. nuclear weapon.
The newcomer to the World Championships believes in his chances to go all the way in the tournament.
The final tournament of the World Cup is scheduled for Wednesday. Littler turns 17 on January 21st. Winning the World Championship gold would be a great premature birthday present for him.
– If I have the best game throughout the tournament, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible. I know that I have a good chance for that, he stated towards the end of last year.
Last year, a 33-year-old Englishman celebrated the World Championship gold Michael Smith.
