Secret Invasion kills Maria Hill: Episode 1 ending explained
In the first episode of Secret Invasion, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) team up to stop a terrorist attack used by the Skrulls to provoke a war between Russia and the United States want. Unfortunately, they don’t succeed in this endeavor.

Maria Hill in Secret Invasion
On a square in Moscow, before the eyes of Fury and his comrades-in-arms, there was a great misfortune and a heavy loss. After the bombing, Maria Hill is unexpectedly attacked by the Skrull Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), who has taken the form of Nick Fury. shot. The shot is deadly. Maria bleeds to death while Fury has to flee.
The former SHIELD commander has been a part of the MCU since The Avengers. Since then, appearances in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, Avengers 4: Endgame, and the Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD series Spider-Man: Far From Home also featured a version of Maria Hill that herself but turned out to be a cloaked Skrull.
The shock is deep. Because hardly anyone saw coming that the new Marvel series already canceled the eagerly awaited return of Maria Hill in episode 1 and that the MCU simply got rid of her after 11 years. Last but not least, Maria Hill’s story didn’t even get a proper ending. A heroic death looks different. And that’s why we should doubt her death.
Is Maria Hill really dead or is a Marvel twist repeating itself?
We can already tell you that much about episode 2 (small spoiler): Maria Hill will not be miraculously resurrected. The series tells us insistently that Maria died in action. Her death brings maximum emotional weight to Nick Fury’s failure and makes it clear that no one is safe on this series.
A little distrust should nevertheless be appropriate when we the central Secret Invasion theme of deception keep in mind. It wouldn’t be the first time the MCU has faked the death of a main character, only to surprise us with their spectacular return.
Secret Invasion’s gritty and political tone grew strong inspired by Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The series could also use one of the biggest twists of the MCU model: Nick Fury faked his death (including funeral) to protect himself from the HYDRA conspiracy – with the help of Maria Hill.
Secret Invasion could now repeat this Nick Fury trick. By getting his closest confidant out of the Skrull’s line of fire and letting her act covertly in the background from now on.
