On paper, The Takeover sounds like a gripping 90 minutes. Law-abiding hacker Mel (Holly Mae Brood) paralyzes a criminal network that frames her for murder in revenge. Chased by villains and the police, she has to prove her innocence. Hacker theme, escape dramaturgy and the idea of a large, invisible conspiracy all remind a bit of the genre highlight The Public Enemy No. 1.

Hunted on All Sides: Mel (Holly Mae Brood)
Unfortunately the few published reviews speak a different language. This is reflected in the reviews, among other things.
“If you need something light and simple, you’ve come to the right place“, Ready Steady Cut is at least semi-positive and praises Brood’s acting. However, the film clearly lacks innovation and character development, according to the site.
MoviesR adopts a harsher tone, criticizing The Takeover’s boring action sequences and insubstantial characters. The thriller crash”into the wall of a cinematic catastrophe“ and be one of the laziest told films of the year.
The IMDb reviews are even more devastating. “The acting is painfully stilted and the hacking not even remotely realistic“, can be read there. Another community member describes the film as “predictable” disappointment.
Conclusion: Is the Netflix hit The Takeover worth it?
Judging by the reaction of most viewers is The Takeover a thriller from the Netflix drawing board, who can score neither in the action scenes nor with exciting characters. Those who are interested in the topic should perhaps take a look at the cult film Hackers – In the FBI’s Network.
