Is the elaborate fantasy hit Pinocchio worth it?

The cartoon classic Pinocchio is a cherished childhood memory for many. And at the same time a hard-to-reach fantasy standard. For more than 80 years, new adaptations have tried to come close to the great role model. Disney’s Pinocchio with Tom Hanks recently failed with a bang. But exceptional director Guillermo del Toro has now created his own Pinocchio for Netflix. Is the movie worth it?

Del Toro tells the well-known story in an amazingly dark way in his immensely elaborate fantasy blockbuster. Gepetto (Original Voice: David Bradley) is a merciless and bitter father to energetic Pinocchio (Gregory Mann). And from his example we get to know many on the journey of the wooden boy through fascist Italy. but does the sometimes tough result go down well?

Looking at the average review ratings the question can be answered very simply with “Yes” respond.

The reaction to the fantasy adaptation is almost entirely positive. Like many other review sites, RogerEbert.com praises Del Toro’s attention to detail and daring to use a somber tone. The film is a “perfect masterpiece“, it says in the final judgment. Such assessments stand in stark contrast to the most recent Disney film adaptation, which many accused of lack of ideas and listlessness (via Rotten Tomatoes).

  • However, not everyone shares the rapturous enthusiasm for Del Toro’s film. The New York Times, for example bumps into “disturbingly reckless handling of fascism“, while the New Yorker den’creative abundance” and criticized the musical ambitions.

    Nonetheless, the film will be enjoyed by the vast majority of viewers and Del Toro fans in particular. Above all Followers of his masterpiece Pan’s Labyrinth and lovers of dark fantasy animation such as Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride or Coraline will get their money’s worth.
