When Criminal Minds: Evolution continued the hit series, many fans were surprised that Matthew Gray Gubler’s Dr Spencer Reid was not part of the castMany fans hoped to see the Criminal Minds genius with three doctorates again. The fact that the character has not been forgotten is shown by the allusions to him within the series. But whether Spencer will actually return to action seems to remain one of the most pressing questions for fans.
Everyone wants Matthew Gray Gubler to return to Criminal Minds
So far, Matthew Gray Gubler has not been able to return to the series because he was busy with other projects. In addition to his work as an actor, he is also author and illustrator.
When Criminal Minds: Evolution was being filmed, Gubler was busy with his children’s book The Little Kid With the Big Green Hand. In an interview with TV Insider, showrunner Erica Messer talked about Gubler’s unavailability and hinted that she would be keen for Dr. Spencer to return.
Gubler himself shows great interest into reprise the role of Spencer. The Six O’Clock Show spoke to the actor about whether he would return and his answer was very clear:
Of course! It would be an honor. I would absolutely love it.
Gubler can hardly wait and hopes that the schedules allow him to be added back to the cast. You can see the whole interview here:

During the first season of Criminal Minds: Evolution, Dr. Spencer Reid was mentioned several times. His absence was explained in the series by him working with another unit. Some characters also mentioned that they would like to talk to him, as his unorthodox methods often helped solve a case. The finale even hinted at an important personwith many fans hoping it would be Spencer coming through the door.
This would lay the foundation for Spencer’s return. It would make fans very happy if he entered the room in the Season 2 opening. But showrunner Messer also mentioned in her interview with TV Insider that they cannot promise whether Gubler will return.
So we’ll have to wait until the next season to find out who will enter the room from the season finale and whether it will be Dr. Spencer Reid. The signs should give fans hope and maybe we’ll be rewarded for our wait.
