Purchase price, tax and insurance are just a few parts of the total cost of your car. Kvd car has analyzed the 15 most popular car models on the used market to see how much they really cost to own.
In the analysis, all expense items for the cars have been calculated, including hidden costs such as depreciation. They looked at cars from model years 2019 to 2021 with up to 4,500 miles on the odometer, and based the calculation on three years of ownership.

Depreciation the big culprit
According to the survey, the most economical car to own is the small Toyota Yaris 1.5 Hybrid, with an estimated monthly cost of just SEK 3,592.
The car is not only cheap to insure, tax and refuel, but is also towed with minimal depreciation. A three-year-old Toyota Yaris Hybrid today sells for around SEK 160,000, and is expected to be worth around SEK 118,000 in three years. This represents a loss in value of just over SEK 40,000.
In second, fourth and fifth place we find the plug-in hybrids Kia Niro PHEV, Kia Optima PHEV and Volkswagen Passat GTE, while third place is occupied by the petrol car Volkswagen Golf Sportscombi.
That the Kia Niro PHEV is more economical to own than the Volkswagen Golf is due to its lower fuel consumption, even though the Golf does not lose value as quickly.

Electric cars more expensive to own
An interesting detail about the list is that no electric cars are included among the most economical cars, even though they have significantly lower fuel costs.
The problem for electric cars is that they are often drawn with high depreciation and insurance.
Under the conditions when the Toyota Yaris is expected to lose roughly SEK 40,000 in value, a Tesla Model 3 Long Range is expected to lose SEK 114,000 – almost three times as much.
The Tesla is also expected to cost a whopping SEK 24,525 to insure over the three years, compared to SEK 7,190 for the Kia Niro PHEV, which is the cheapest car in the compilation to insure.
