Is Secret Invasion worth it on Disney+?

After 15 years, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) gets his own story for the first time in the form of the new Marvel series Secret Invasion, which has been on Disney+ since June 21, 2023. As the first series of Phase 5 of the MCU, it puts the Avengers founder at the center of a Skrull conspiracy and asks the question: Who else can I trust?

In the vein of political and more serious Marvel chapters like Captain America 2: The Return of the First Avenger and most recently The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Secret Invasion has a mostly more mature tone. Disney+ gave her one for a reason Age rating from 16 years.

But is Secret Invasion any good? And can the series stand up to comparison to Star Wars highlight Andor? My colleague Matthias Hopf and I were able to preview the first two episodes and will answer these questions in the new episode of the Moviepilot podcast Streamgegefuehl:

In the podcast we give you one spoiler-free first impression of the first two episodes by Secret Invasion. Along the way, we’ll explain how the series differs from previous MCU adventures, whether it’s managed to transition into a more mature genre, and whether the shocking twists and surprises can inspire.

Anyone who has had enough of the numerous superhero stories full of CGI effects and multiverse madness will get an exciting contrast program with Secret Invasion. As Spy thriller with sci-fi elements we dive into an international conspiracy together with Nick Fury, which is actually unstoppable – and in which the former Avengers founder is directly responsible.

With a view to the exciting cast of Secret Invsion we examine how established MCU characters like Nick Fury, Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) fare as new series heroes and meet MCU newcomers Emilia Clarke (as Talos’ daughter G’iah) , Kingsley Ben-Adir (as Skrull villain Gravik) and Olivia Colman (as Sonya Falsworth).

We agree on one point: Olivia Colman combines the best of her The Crown monarch and Harry Potter villain Dolores Umbridge in her unpredictable MI6 agent – and is already one of the biggest highlights of the series.
