Is Larian buying the huge license behind Baldur’s Gate 3? That’s what the boss says

In recent days, there have been reports that Larian Studios, the makers of Baldur’s Gate 3, are in negotiations with Hasbro to buy the massive fantasy franchise Dungeons & Dragon, on which their hit role-playing game is based. The Chinese giant Tencent (LoL) should play a role in the deal. Now the boss of Larian and the Wizards of the Coast speak out.

That’s what the rumor said: A Chinese site reported on January 30th. (via speed daily):

  • Habsbro plans to sell its Dungeons and Dragons license to Tencent because they are in financial crisis.
  • Hasbro actually wanted to sell to Larian Studios, the makers of the excellent Baldur’s Gate 3, but they lacked the money – that’s why Tencent came into play, which holds 30% of Larian. The penguin owns everything.
  • It wasn’t clear whether Tencent should buy the entire Dungeons and Dragons license or just the right to develop video games in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

    Vincke contradicts rumor

    This is what the boss of Baldur’s Gate 3 says: The boss of Larian, Swen Vincke says (via twitter):

    “It’s silly for me to tweet about not buying something that’s not for sale, so I’m not doing it. But just in case you’re wondering, we’re not doing it. Hope that clears it up.”

    Apparently this means: No, you will not buy the license.

    Wizards of the Coast (Hasbro) say: We don’t sell

    This is what the Wizards of the Coast say: The Wizards of the Coast belong to the Hasbro group and are responsible for Dungeons and Dragons. you say [Statement liegt MeinMMO vor]:

    “We speak to Tencent regularly and have multiple partnerships with them across a number of our IPs. We don’t normally comment on internet rumors, but just to be clear: We have no plans to sell our D&D IP.     That would be called a very clear denial.
