The PS5 is now over 3 years old. But is it still worth buying a PS5 in 2024? MeinMMO looks at the advantages and disadvantages of the Sony console and explains what you need to consider if you are thinking about buying it.
The PS5 was released on November 12, 2020 and since then a number of variants and new editions of the PS5 have been released. But is it still worth buying a PS5, almost 4 years after its release?
MeinMMO looks at the advantages and disadvantages of the PS5 and explains the reasons for or against buying a PS5.
What speaks for a PS5 in 2024?
Modern technology: Even after almost 4 years, the PS5 still offers you modern technology. Games load quickly and you can enjoy all titles in 4K. Even a well-known YouTuber had to say that the PS5 can still keep up with modern PCs.
Accessible and easier Started: Basically, a PS5 offers a comparatively easy introduction to gaming. The games start straight away, the console makes many settings itself and all you have to worry about is playing. The hurdle is significantly higher on a PC.
DualSense controller: The PS5 comes with the new and improved DualSense controller, which offers a number of exciting features such as haptic feedback or special triggers. There is now also the very good DualSense Edge for the PS5 with additional paddles on the back.
Backward compatibility: The PS5 is backwards compatible with most PS4 games. You can therefore continue to play your favorite old titles on the PS5. Please note, however, that you also need a drive for games on disc.
Slim model: The new Slim model is slimmer, quieter and uses less power than the old model. There is no faster hardware, Sony has mainly done fine tuning. You can also find all important information about the slim model on MeinMMO.
Upgrade from PS4 to PS5: Another reason why a PS5 could be worthwhile would be if you are still on PS4 but want to play new games. The new Banishers, for example, is not appearing on PS4:
What speaks against a PS5 in 2024?
PS5 Pro: Not announced yet, but the PS5 Pro should come at some point. Nobody knows when it’s coming, but it’s something to keep in mind if you want to buy a PS5 now. Sony has already stated that the PS5 should have reached its final cycle. A new console is therefore more than safe.
Price and follow-up costs: The PS5 is not exactly cheap at 549 or 449 euros (digital). You also have to keep in mind that you also have to pay for PS Plus (multiplayer) and games. As a rule, full-price titles cost 70 to 80 euros. And the discount promotions in the PS Store are, on average, worse than promotions on Steam or the Epic Game Store.
Lack of exclusive games: The PS5 only had a limited number of exclusive games at launch, which disappointed many players. While more exclusive titles have been released in recent years, the PS5 library is still not very extensive despite some excellent exclusives.
Sony is now also releasing exclusive titles for the PC. With enough patience you no longer need to buy a PS5, you just have to wait for a PC release. Sony has already explained how long games will remain PS5 exclusive until they appear on other platforms.
Volume: Players repeatedly criticize that their PS5 is too loud. But it depends on which model you “get.” Sony installs a different fan depending on the model. It’s a matter of luck whether you get a loud or quiet model. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a negative point, but it can annoy some players.
Alternatives to the PS5: Xbox Series X|S or gaming PC
The Xbox Series X: The Xbox offers you almost identical hardware compared to the PS5: The PS5’s SSD is a little faster, but the Xbox’s chip clocks a little faster. The same combination chip (APU) from AMD works in both systems. The Xbox Series S as an alternative has a slower chip.
You can play almost the same titles on both platforms, and both platforms have a few exclusive titles (Halo on the Xbox or Spider-Man on the PS5) on offer.
Gaming PC: At first glance, the gaming PC is less user-friendly than a gaming console, but it offers you almost endless freedom when it comes to settings and options. On top of that, you can upgrade or convert a gaming PC at any time, provided you have the appropriate budget. This is also the biggest disadvantage of the gaming PC: the starting price is significantly higher than an Xbox or a PS5.
Conclusion: Is the PS5 2024 worth it?
Basically, the PS5 is a much more accessible and attractive offer in 2024 than it was at release, where scalpers bought every console available. But now scalpers are stuck with the PS5 consoles. Aside from that, the PS5 offers you an extensive game library with many strong titles.
Nevertheless, there are also reasons that speak against a PS5. Especially when it comes to exclusive titles, the horsepower is no longer as strong as it used to be, as more and more titles are also being released for the PC. A possible PS5 Pro could also speak against the purchase.
