Cannes boss confused: Oppenheimer clears the way for Barbie and doesn’t start until the end of the year?

When Variety asked festival director Thierry Fremaux whether there was a chance that Oppenheimer later in the Cannes program is recorded, he revealed that the film will not be finished in time.

Unfortunately, no. I would have [Oppenehimer] love to [im Programm] had, but will end of the year as part of the award strategy [von Universal] published. Oppenheimer and Barbie are the two films I most regret not getting. But they won’t be ready until May.

One bit of confusion in Fremaux’s reply is that he says Oppenheimer won’t be released until the end of the year. This is surprising, because so far the biopic was supposed to be about J. Robert Oppenheimer the same day as Barbie start in cinemas. In Germany that would be July 20, 2023. We are a long way from the end of the year here.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer hasn’t been officially postponed yet, but it’s still possible

Did Nolan give in after seeing the awesome Barbie trailer? The answer is probably less dramatic. Either Fremaux isn’t that particular about dates or Universal actually decided to postpone Oppenheimer to make the film better for the forthcoming awards season to position.

Anyone who wants to win an Oscar or other film prizes usually chooses an autumn start in Hollywood. The Venice, Telluride and Toronto film festivals have often proved to be perfect launch pad proven for a successful award campaign. Universal could now also go down this path with Oppenheimer.
