Ireland: towards a revision of the Constitution, deemed sexist towards women

Ireland towards a revision of the Constitution deemed sexist towards

In Ireland, two referendums are being organized on Women’s Rights Day to amend articles of the Constitution. Adopted in 1937, they define the role of the housewife, but also what a family should be. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the time had come to put an end to “very dated, very sexist” language. These articles have been contested for a long time by progressive associations. Marked by Catholic tradition, Ireland has become much liberalized on social issues in recent years. Today’s vote is part of this development.
