Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, pardons tens of thousands of prisoners, Iranian state news agencies say. But at the same time as the news comes, new arrests are made.

Iranian authorities have detained a journalist who works for independent media. The detainee’s sister, also a journalist who reported on Mahsa Amini’s death, is being held by Iranian authorities, reports AFP.

This calls into question the announcement from Tehran about amnesty for prisoners critical of the regime. The country’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei is said to have decided on the amnesty, according to state news agencies.

The announcement comes in connection with the celebration of the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.
