The Iranian prosecutor demands the 33-year-old Swedish EU diplomat For Johan Floderus death sentence.

Floderus is accused of spying for Israel. Floderus’ official crime title is “ground corruption”. It is one of the most serious possible crimes in Iran and carries a maximum penalty of death.

– Due to the significance and harmfulness of the accused’s actions, I demand the most severe possible punishment, the prosecutor said, according to the Mizan news service of the judiciary.

Floderus was arrested at the airport in Tehran, the capital of Iran, in April 2022, when he was returning to the country from a holiday trip.

His trial began last December. The date of the pronouncement of the judgment is not yet known. Floderus’ representatives still have a week to submit the defense’s view on the matter to the court.

Sweden and the EU have constantly demanded the release of Floderus. Last week, Sweden summoned Iran’s diplomatic representative for an interview over the incident.

Relations between Iran and Sweden have deteriorated since Sweden sentenced a former Iranian prison worker to life imprisonment in 2022 for serious violations of international law and murder.

According to the verdict, the prison guard had been involved in the events during which the Iranian regime killed at least 5,000 representatives of the MEK opposition group in the final phase of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.

Iran has imprisoned several citizens of Western countries. Western countries and human rights organizations have accused Iran of hostage diplomacy.
