Iranian media: Popular pop singer sentenced to death for blasphemy | News in brief

According to the Etemad magazine, which reports on the matter, the decision is not yet legally binding, and it can still be appealed.

Iran’s Supreme Court has sentenced a popular singer-rapper To Tatalo to death for, among other things, blasphemy, says the reformist Etemad magazine on its website.

The singer was previously sentenced to five years in prison for insulting the Prophet Muhammad, but the Supreme Court now accepted the prosecutor’s appeal and changed the sentence to death.

According to the newspaper, the decision is not yet legally binding, and it can still be appealed.

37-year-old Tataloo (given name Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo) lived in Istanbul, Turkey, from 2018 until December of the following year, when the Turkish police handed him over to Iran. He has been in custody since then.

Tataloo has also been sentenced to ten years in prison for promoting prostitution, in addition to which charges have been brought against him for, among other things, propaganda against the Islamic Republic.

In previous years, Iran’s conservative politicians saw Tataloo as an opportunity to reach younger, liberal generations. For example, in 2015, Tataloo released a song in which he supported Iran’s nuclear program.
