At least 84 people were killed in Wednesday’s two explosions near the tomb of General Qassem Soleimani in southern Iran, Iranian authorities said.
The death toll is a slightly lower number than previously stated. According to previous information, it was about over 100 dead.
Top general Qassem Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq in 2020. Thousands of people had gathered to mark the anniversary of his death when both explosions occurred.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for what appears to be the deadliest attack in Iran since the 1979 revolution. The country’s leaders have vowed to punish those responsible.
At least 284 people were injured in the explosions, according to the Iranian authorities.
