The tip should have come in recent weeks and should have caused the Secret Service to increase security around the ex-president, but despite this, he was shot and slightly injured during a speech last weekend.
CNN reports that the new information comes with more question marks about how the security work around Trump looked.
The channel further reports that it is unclear whether Trump’s staff has been informed of the Iranian threat, and writes the following in a response:
“We do not comment on details of the security surrounding President Trump. All questions are forwarded to the Secret Service.”
No more spontaneous meetings
According to CNN, the Secret Service has warned Trump of the risks of holding meetings outdoors, where it is more difficult to guarantee his safety.
Trump has previously been in the habit of holding spontaneous question and answer sessions, but he reportedly stopped doing so after warnings.
Increased threat from Iran
Iran has vowed revenge for General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in January 2020.
At the time of his death, Soleimani was the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard special forces, and members of the Revolutionary Guard were indicted in August 2022 for plotting to assassinate Trump adviser John Bolton.
Trump’s former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has also been singled out as a target.
In recent months, the United States has been concerned about the threat posed by Iran, with recent reports of a plot against Trump being described as a significant escalation.
Iran denies
Iran’s embassy in the United States in turn refutes the information, reports Reuters.
They believe that Donald Trump is a criminal for having approved the attack on Soleimani, but believe that they chose to go the “legal route instead”.
