Iran is urging the United States to remove the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from the list of foreign terrorist organizations.
On Tuesday, the United States reiterated its concern about Iran’s nuclear program and the stalled talks on Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal (JPCOA).
Foreign minister Antony Blinken advocated before the Senate to restore the treaty and said no to the ex-president Donald Trumpin the government’s decision to exit it in 2018 produced positive results.
Iran has stepped up its nuclear program following the US withdrawal from the agreement. According to Blinken, Iran has come so far in its uranium enrichment program that it could have the necessary material for a nuclear weapon in a matter of weeks.
The U.S. administration, like Iran’s arch-enemy Israel, has issued similar warnings before.
“It would be a serious mistake for US and European leaders to miss the opportunity to prevent a nuclear crisis in the Middle East,” the petition said.
A list of U.S. terrorist organizations as a stick
The return of the agreement between Iran, the United States, Russia, Britain, China, France, Germany and the EU has been negotiated in the Austrian capital, Vienna, for about a year. Negotiations have been stalled since March.
Significant progress was made until Russia withdrew from the negotiating table the sanctions imposed on it by the war in Ukraine. Russia began demanding a written commitment from the United States that international sanctions imposed on Russia would not be detrimental to trade, investment, and “military-technical cooperation” between it and Iran.
Iran’s demand that the United States remove Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from the list of foreign terrorist organizations has finally become a stick of contention.
Former US President Trump added the Revolutionary Guard to the list in 2019. In 2020, the United States launched a missile strike on Baghdad, Iraq, under the influence of Trump, killing an influential commander of the Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Qassim Suleimani.
American newspaper According to Foreign Police (you switch to another service) The United States has considered removing the Revolutionary Guard from the list, although it would remain subject to sanctions. However, the idea raises significant opposition both in Washington and in the U.S. allies of Israel and the Gulf.
In addition, Iran has demanded assurances from the United States that it will not rescind the agreement if the Republican Party comes to power in the next presidential election.
