While iOS 16 is approaching, the jailbreak scene has just announced that iPhone 13 and iPads running iOS and iPadOS 15 will soon be “unlockable”. Good news for aficionados of this practice, but which still raises short and medium term security issues.
Since the first steps of the iPhone and iPhone OS, which then became iOS, the Apple smartphone has come a long way in terms of the functions offered and the options available. Each time, it was like a blow to the raison d’être of the jailbreak scene. A parallel scene, which triumphed, when iOS still lacked certain essential ergonomic points, not to mention the absence even of an App Store in its infancy.
iOS 15 is about to drop
Nevertheless, the small world of jailbreak continues to evolve and after suffering serious setbacks, it is back in the game with the discovery of an incorrigible exploit in Apple Silicon chips, which has opened the doors to iPhones running iOS 13. In 2021, another jailbreak tool rose to prominence which unlocked iPhone 12s running iOS 14…
While the first public betas of iOS 16 are now available and the final version will, logically, be launched next September, it seems that iOS 15 is about to drop in turn.
The Odyssey Team, which was already working on the jailbreaks of previous versions of iOS, has just published the first images of a new jailbreak tool, operational with iOS 15 and called Cheyote, formerly known as code Taurine15.

One of the members of the Odyssey team split froma post on Reddit where it is explained that “the jailbreak is progressing well” and that the team “hopes to be able to provide it to users soon”.
Not all versions of iOS 15
But more interesting, it details which version of iOS 15 will be affected by the jailbreak, and when. “15.0-15.1.1 will be compatible at launch,” he explains, and the team seems to be looking to jailbreak iOS 15.4.1 as well. On the other hand, it is unlikely that it will be easy to port the jailbreak for iOS 15.5, which notably corrected one of the bugs which serves as its base.
Even if all versions of iOS 15 will not be immediately affected, this impending jailbreak means that iPhone 13 owners will soon be able to take advantage of it, the same for all Apple tablets running iPadOS 15.
At a time when Apple will undoubtedly find itself forced to open the doors of its iPhones to sideloading, it is interesting to see that the jailbreak is still there, which allows users to precisely download applications elsewhere than in the App Store from the start. It also allows file systems to be accessed much more freely, and iOS to be more customizable.
Apple is obviously opposed to jailbreaking your devices, and indulges in a kind of giant cat-and-mouse game with hackers like the Odyssey Team. Beyond the question of the new features of iOS 16, which take away a little interest from jailbreaking, there is obviously always the question of the security of jailbroken devices, since they cannot be updated with the latest versions of ‘iOS.
