In her latest book The Nord Stream Trap, journalist Marion Van Renterghem returns to this major energy project Nordstream I and II, two gas pipelines directly linking Russia and Germany, passing under the Baltic. Today, Nordstream I closed, and Nordstream II never operated. Worse, the pipelines were sabotaged. How can we explain the fiasco of this project? For Europeans, it was above all a matter of obtaining cheap gas, without the risk of cuts. But for Vladimir Putin, the trap was almost perfect: he wanted to prepare the invasion of Ukraine, without risking “annoying” the cautious Europeans. Put Westerners to sleep, to avoid any reaction… But History was not written according to these plans.
