If the first names Gabriel and Alma top the ranking of the most given first names, a 3-letter first name (invented!) is attracting more and more parents, so much so that it was the most given first name in 2023.

Since the relaxation of the law concerning the attribution of first names, the creation of first names has abounded: Eeva, Danaël, Lého, Timaé, Lilly-Rose, Lilwenn, Anaé, Kaëlys… There are indeed many creative parents; who wish to distinguish their offspring from the classics Edouard, Antoine or Louis. Moreover, among all the first names invented, it is a very short first name of only 3 letters, which wins all the votes…

A first name of Hebrew origin

No offense to Alixya, Laurika, Izalie, Kyliam and other Alexim, it is the first name Mya which was given the most in 2023. 1,600 births of little Mya have in fact been recorded.

A variant of the first name Mia, of Hebrew origin (derived from the Arabic first name Myriam), which has the etymology “she who raises” in Hebrew.

A first name that is original to say the least – which only arrived late in France – from the 1970s.

But Mya quickly won the hearts of the French; she which is now part of the top 10 of the most given female first names in 2023 in many French departments.

It remains to be seen whether this trend continues over time.

Invented first name: is the choice controlled?

Although, in 1993, the legislation was relaxed on this subject – and more and more first names are accepted – the choice of this one remains controlled.

It must therefore respect the following rules, in which case the registrar reserves the right to refuse it:

    • The first name, alone or combined with the family name, must not be contrary to the interests of the child. Example: ridiculous or rude first name. It is for these reasons that in 2012 and 2015, the first names Titeuf, Nutella and Princess-Rebecca were rejected.
    • The first name must respect the right of another person to have their last name protected. Example: choosing the last name of a famous person as your first name.
    • A child who bears the name of only one of his parents cannot have the name of the other parent as his first name. Example: a child has Mr. Dupont and Mrs. Martin as parents. If this child only has Dupont as his last name, he cannot have Martin as his first name.
