UEFA has announced that Russia has been banned from this summer’s European Women’s Football Championship, and that Russian clubs are also banned from participating in next year’s tournaments.
UEFA reported that Russia’s applications to host the Euro 2028 and Euro 2032 football championships are also not eligible.
UEFA’s embargo decisions were taken due to the occupation of Ukraine.
In February, Russian club teams and national teams were banned “until further notice” by FIFA and UEFA.
UEFA announced that Portugal, which was eliminated in the play-off match, will join Russia in the women’s Euro 2022 tournament to be held in July.
The Russian Women’s National Football Team will also not be able to participate in the 2023 World Cup qualifying matches, and the Men’s National Football Team will not be able to compete in the Nations League for the 2022-2023 season.
The Russian team, which is in the second group of the B League, will automatically be counted as the fourth in the group and will be dropped after the group matches.
Bans on club teams also mean that Russian teams cannot participate in the men’s and women’s Champions League, Europa League or European Conference League in the 2022-2023 season.
In March, UEFA confirmed that, alongside England and Ireland and Turkey, Russia had applied to host Euro 2028 and Euro 2032.
UEFA announced that Russia is ineligible to host under its rule, which stipulates that UEFA, other host candidates, the host selection process and not engage in behavior that would discredit European football.
The inability of the Russian teams to participate in the Champions League benefited the Scottish teams.
Thus, the Scottish champion will start the tournament directly from the groups, while the league runner-up will enter the Champions League from the third qualifying round, not the second.
