Internet via satellite Starlink download speeds exceed those of the

The speedtest application Ookla has just published the results of its satellite barometer for the fourth quarter of 2021 where it compares the performance of Starlink with that of the terrestrial fixed network around the world.

Starlink users in France get a median download speed of 121.21 Mbps. A figure up from the third quarter of 2021 when 102.15 Mbit / s had been reached.

A medium speed and not average

This allows Starlink to once again exceed the national fixed broadband median which would be 90.88 Mbit/s in our country, according to Ookla. It will be observed here that taking into account the median and not the average flattens the highest speeds of optical fiber in France. But the figure is probably closer to the actual user experience.

We will add all the same to qualify that we would like to know the number of French users of Starlink, which should not be high, which should also play favorably on the speeds obtained.

Upstream and latency are worse

The picture is less glorious concerning the upstream flow. Starlink’s median speed is 17.20 Mbps compared to 69.49 Mbps nationally. This is also the case in latency. Starlink reaches 51 ms against 12 ms for the fixed network. Its satellites may be in low orbit, but the communication transmission delay is still much higher than with land lines.

Despite everything, Starlink’s performance remains interesting. “Starlink remains a good option for rural French consumers”concludes Ookla.

Too bad they are not compared with those of a service like that provided by the KA-SAT satellite recently victim of a cyberattack.
